TO BE UPDATED IN 2016 - The Line Up for 2015 is shaping up irie style - back by popular demand we have the 8 piece brass funk/ragga explosion that is Bullhorn, Melbourne's utterly unbelievably fantastic ascended hip hop maestros Hugo & Treats, Torres Strait Islands' budding guitar virtuoso Chris Tamwoy, Byron Bay's number one reggae crew the 420 Sound System and the SkankStarz, PNG's slinky sounding soulstress Loa, Brisbane's island vibin' Progressive Tan, Latino goddess of soul Katia Demeester, live Drum & Bass from the RudeKat Sound and so many more to be announced. Kuranda Roots, now in it’s 12th year will be back at the Billabong from June 12-13. Zennith Boyz

Zennith are the new future of Australian roots and Indigenous music (with a healthy dose of roots, rock, reggae, and funky hip hop) all the way from the deep scrub of Bulwai Country in Kuranda, Far North Queensland. Zennith produce high-energy rocking reggae rhythms and rhymes, which fuse hip-hop and traditional music. They are a core group of six Kuranda musicians, Aden Brim (singer songwriter/guitar), Astro Brim (singer-songwriter/percussion/vocals), Willie Brim (singer songwriter, keys, guitar), Isaac Crowley (bass), Lindsay Snider (drums/didgeridoo/MC) Biri-Jah (lead guitar) and backing with a brass section. What’s interesting about Zennith is the diverse range of ages in the band, and experience. Made up of the Brim family, dad Willie and sons Astro and Aden, it also features relations Lindsay and Biri-Jah with adopted son Isaac resulting in a collaborative effort that not only has extreme musical chemistry, but also a cross-section of generations and a similar vision. Zennith are passionate about their cultural heritage, and sharing that heritage to the greater public. It is this passion that is aptly demonstrated in their music, lyrics and performances. They take great pride in performing music in culturally diverse locations. Click here to visit our Facebook page

Kuranda Original Rainforest Market

Unique and diverse, deeply immersed in local history and culture.

Open 7 days - from 9.30am until 3.00pm

These markets had their humble beginnings in 1978 organized by a group of local hippy artists and crafts people. The original marketeers had to pay for the operation of their own train service for two seasons, to prove commercial viability of the service to the Queensland Railway Department. These markets put Kuranda on the map, cementing it’s reputation as an exotic rainforest destination for local and international visitors.

Today the Original Markets has retained it’s atmosphere, with many local artists and personalities making the market part of their lifestyle. Many of the current marketeers have been involved in the markets during the course of the last 25 – 30 years.

Kuranda Facebook Community Leadership
I would love to attend a workshop to learn more a...

I would love to attend a workshop to learn more about the technical aspects of Facebook.  I think there are others in our community who may benefit from learning more about using Facebook to network in our community and set up special interest groups to get stuff done.

The idea so far is:

  1. Define our target group. From my observation most younger generations have got the hang of it… and I must say I’ve been a bit slow on the uptake with FB at 46 :- ) I guess we’re looking for members of our community who are already using the internet for email and the web, perhaps are already involved in community activities where other members of that group are using FB.  They may have heard of it – but don’t know how it works.  This usually makes people think it’s going to be hard to learn – and of course learning things can be hard at times (particularly as I get older :- )  There may also be people who use Facebook already and would like to learn more advanced techniques for getting their words and pictures out there to connect with others.
  2. What type of session is it? How long does it go for?  Who will present it?  How many sessions will there be?  Will there be a cost?  I think it needs to be a friendly session in a smaller size group where people feel they can ask questions and not look dumb :- )  I think an hour or two is long enough.  As I don’t know how long it will take to teach a newbie like me (and others who may be interested) how to create groups, get members, talk to them, what’s a PM anyway?, who gets what I post on my wall, what happens when my status changes, how do others find/ contact me, how do I set up a page for my business, etc. I will leave the number of sessions up to the presenters. I would like there to be a cost.  It would be awesome to donate $10 per person to the presenter/s.  If there is a lot of interest there could be multiple sessions for a while until those interested know what they need to know.  We could also run refreshers every year, if there is interest.
  3. Choose a venue in the village that has electricity and can get an internet connection, is centrally located and accessible (they know where it is and are comfortable going there) to our target group. *sugggestions? Rec Centre?
  4. Figure out the logistics of a big screen, laptop, internet connection, tables, chairs, refreshments, etc
  5. The pitch will be along the lines of: Save time - get involved with your community – learn how to use Facebook to connect with your friends, family and Kuranda.  We just need to define the message a bit as these are the sentences that we’ll use in the marketing material below.  All suggestions welcome!
  6. Make a DL flyer for noticeboards around the village and 500 x 500 pixel graphic for email / Facebook for marketing the idea. * I can arrange these.

Please let me know if anyone else is interested.

Kuranda State Forest
After becoming interested in the story of our Kura...

After becoming interested in the story of our Kuranda State Forest from an article in the Kuranda Paper I went to a Friends of the Earth meeting on 14 May 2015 to find out more.   As I am gathering more information I thought it best to collect it here so we can all access and see the paths that are being trodden and by whom.  Please add your comments to add more to this story.

After the meeting John Gleu (Friends of the Earth Kuranda) sent me some additional information via email from news articles he had collected (thanks John :- ):

And outlined some questions FoE wanted to ask Hancock Plantations:

  1. Are there any other chemicals that you use as a weedicide apart from Roundup and Starane?
  2. What chemical is used as the pre-emergent?
  3. Do you use, or did you used to use, 245T, 24 D, Atrazine, Simazine, or anything similar on the Kuranda pine plantation?
  4. How long is the harvest cycle from planting to logging?
  5. Have they done water tests to see if there is roundup and Starane runoff, or its break down products, in the local creeks and the Barron River?
  6. Now that Round off has being re-classified as ‘probably carcinogenic’ how are you going to change your use of the chemical or its application methods?
  7. What type of helicopter is used for the spray?
  8. Who do you notify the local people before aerial spraying is doing?
  9. What is the main use of the timber after it has been cut and where is it sent to?
  10. Is there a possibility of growing native trees that are more suitable for the area and for the wildlife?

On 29 June, John Gleu sent this letter to Craig Crawford - CraigCrawford 29June2015

Hancock Queensland Plantations has been sold 300,000 hectares of Queensland State Forest to wreck. In the area just around Kuranda they have 4,200 hectares to trash - Plantation forests on State land

"Word of Mouth" has it that the timber is being used for pallets,  posts but mainly it is just being woodchipped to use as mulch. There is little demand for the wood now.  And the timber characteristics of this species means it is a very low value wood.

Here is an article posted by Friends of the Earth Kuranda - March 2013:

http://www.foe.org.au/high-ecological-value-state-forests-be-logged-queensland

After this I started to wonder about the aerial spraying as at the time we and our neighbours could hear the planes at night...

------------------------------------------------------------------

Fluroxypyr is listed on the label as being highly toxic to freshwater fish and aquatic invertebrates and glyphosate has just been reclassified by the World Health Organisation a month ago as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’ – based on the fact that it is found to be carcinogenic to animals.

The reclassification of glyphosate by the WHO is of great concern as the chemical runoff from the pine plantations goes into the Barron River which is used as Kuranda’s town water supply.

Spray drift is also seen as a problem with the close proximity of homes and Kuranda town centre being just a few kilometres away.

The nature corridors that have been left along creeks and streams for the wildlife such as cassowaries are totally inadequate considering the aerial spraying.

http://pesticides.australianmap.net/2015-may-kuranda-state-forest-cleared-pesticides-glyphosate-fluroxypur/

------------------------------------------------------------------

Then panic set in as I realised our precious wildlife is being affected... even though we may not be able to "see" it yet.  Of course they would be affected by products containing chemicals such as glyphosate and fluroxypur - there is plenty about both of those on the internet - you can see for yourself.

"Word of Mouth" has it that bee hives were affected in the area - I'm yet to substantiate that - anyone have any experiences that live close to the drop zone?

Then I'm Google mapping trying to figure out where the plantations are in relation to our property... we keep bees.  I'm looking at the massive clearing here:

kuranda-state-forest-plantation-clearing

and thinking geez that's a long way off where we are... until a friend in front of Google earth pointed out the extent to which the plantations extend across our Kuranda region OMG.

I have emailed Hancock Plantations 21 Dec 15:

---------------------------------------------------------------

information@hqplantations.com.au

Hi,

Can you please send me the map for the locations of the Hancock Plantations in and around Kuranda State Forest.

Kind regards,

jo

--------------------------------------------------------------

I think we need to see how close to our properties this lease extends.

On a lead to find out when / why we missed out on our Kuranda State Forest Reserve being turned over to World Heritage - in a process I have been told via "Word of Mouth" actually happened - I am seeking the document that confirms this process from WTMA.

I have emailed Wet Tropics Management Authority 21 Dec 15:

---------------------------------------------------------------

wettropics@wtma.qld.gov.au

Att: Wet Tropics Management Authority - Executive Director

Hi Scott Buchanan,

I would like access to the mapping that identified which State Forests might be added to World Heritage designation – a process that I believe has been completed.

I believe Kuranda State Forest was on that list – I would like to confirm this information please.  And I would like to know which State Forest Reserves in Queensland were given World Heritage designation during the same process.

Thank you very much for your help.

Kind regards,

jo

---------------------------------------------------------------

By now, for me, this story is becoming more of a conservation issue.  I'm trying to figure out how it's ended up that our state government thought that re-leasing the land - for 99 years-  to Hancock Plantations should happen at all in such a fragile place as the Wet Tropics.

Then I fell in love with the cassowary... as I came to understand we have our own 'Pliocene Park' here with the cassowary as the star attraction!  How could the whole world not be interested in preserving what is sure to be a remnant population of birds that have survived from the early Pliocene 3.6 to 2.58 million years ago.  There might not be any dinosaurs on earth anymore... but there are creatures that can remind us of that time like the cassowary!

wiki-cassowary

Our cassowary and its rainforest home are like a time capsule that has miraculously survived multiple climatic events that caused mass extinctions like the  Quaternary extinction event (the movie Ice Age was based on this) and others.  Habitat loss is now the biggest threat to our cassowary :- (  I plan to make a video about our cassowary for kuranda.tv.

Roadside Stalls
This story starts with a Facebook post:and then I ...

This story starts with a Facebook post:

fb-snip

and then I got to https://www.facebook.com/roadsidestalls/

Myself being a big fan of developing our local food economy I was in disbelief - really?  When was the last time someone died from food poisoning eating Grannies Jam?

Of course preserving seasonal abundance is an art that our grandmothers and those that came before honed over many generations and cultures - it prevented waste and "saved" food for later.  These days with supermarkets there is less emphasis on saving seasonal abundance but nevertheless - that doesn't mean it's not a really important idea to preserve for future generations - it just means the supermarkets have made us forget!

I really admire the 'Preservers' in our community - those people who can't bear to see waste and who see the jars amongst the surplus fruits and vegetables - rather than just the bin.  I appreciate the work involved in preserving foods - we have done a bit of it ourselves - and the joy at cracking open a jar of your own tomato sauce from the abundance a year ago!

Seemed to me the stakes were a little high at $300 / year for a bit of paper to grant you permission to make preserves! Wtf?

This was a media release in response - also printed in the next Kuranda Paper edition:

http://msc.qld.gov.au/media-release-roadside-stalls/

“In the first instance one stallholder was advised they needed to apply for a food licence to manufacture and sell food. The owner of this stall who was manufacturing jam was informed that there was no need to shut down the stall but, simply to make application for a food licence,” Mayor Gilmore said.

Sounds sweet - except "manufacturing jam" sounds way to official for making some jam at home and sticking it out front at your place for sale and "simply to make application for a food licence" sounds easy enough except it costs $300 / year which isn't simple when you're flogging your homemade jam for $5-10 a jar!  Maybe a simple solution on your salary for your home-business-cottage-industry Mr Gilmore!  But what about the rest of us?

So, I emailed Mareeba Shire Council 8 Oct 15 for clarification:

------------------------------------------------------------------------

RE: Roadside Stalls article in the Kuranda Paper - follow up information

Hi,

I wanted to clarify a few points from this article, if I may.

I understand the definition of a “Shop” as per the article.

Some questions:

  1. For a “Roadside Stall” you can sell fresh produce grown on your property – is that correct?  Is there a fee for this permit?
  2. If you want to sell homemade value-add foods such as jam – is this different from only selling fresh produce- as above?
  3. Is there a distinction for different types of homemade value-add foods according to their risk of posing a health issue?

Like this:

High and low risk foods

----

High-risk foods

High-risk foods can be defines as “any ready-to-eat food that will support the growth of pathogenic bacteria easily and does not require any further heat treatment or cooking”. These types of foods are more likely to be implicated as vehicles of food poisoning organisms consumed in food poisoning incidents. Such foods are usually high in protein, require strict temperature control and protection from contamination and include:

  • cooked meat and poultry such as; beef, pork, ham, lamb, chicken, turkey, duck
  • cooked meat products such as; meat pies & pasties, pate, meat stock & gravy, cook-chill meals
  • dairy produce such as; milk, cream, artificial cream, custards, products containing unpasteurised milk, ripened soft & moulded cheeses
  • egg products such as; cooked eggs, quiche and products containing uncooked or lightly cooked eggs, for example; mayonnaise, mousse, home-made ice cream
  • shellfish and other sea-foods such as; mussels, cockles, cooked prawns, raw oysters
  • Farinaceous dishes including; cooked rice, pasta, couscous

Low-risk foods

Low-risk foods are ambient-stable such as; bread, biscuits, cereals, crisps and cakes (not cream cakes). Such foods are unlikely to be implicated in food poisoning and include:

  • foods that have been preserved, for example; smoked or salted fish
  • dry goods, those that contain minimal amounts of moisture, such as; bread, flour, biscuits
  • acidic foods, for example; pickled foods, vinegar, fruit
  • fermented products such as; salami, pepperoni
  • foods with high sugar/fat content for example; jam & chocolate
  • tinned food, whilst unopened

Keep “raw” and “cooked” food separate

Clean and disinfect equipment and surfaces after preparing “raw” food.

Do not leave food at room temperature for more than 1 hour

Do not refreeze food if it has defrosted.

Can you please advise the proposed changes for Roadside Stalls under the new Mareeba Shire Planning Scheme – which is scheduled for adoption in late 2015, early 2016.

Thanks very much for your advice.

Kind regards,

jo

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I got this reply 9 Oct 15:

HI Jo,

Thank you for your email enquiry regarding the roadside stalls in the new Mareeba Shire Planning scheme.

I have noticed your questions relate to town planning issues as well as Environmental Health Issues. Hence I have forwarded this email onto the Town Planning department for answers to your questions 1.

However I am able to clarify question 2 and 3 for you.

With regards to the types of food you can manufacture from a 'home kitchen', the low risk foods you mentioned below would acceptable. Except for the smoke meat and fish products. This is not a licensable activity under Local Council. This is licenced and regulated by Safe Food Queensland a State Government department.

As it stands, Mareeba Shire Council will allow a home kitchen to be licenced if only low risk shelf stable food are produced and then can be on sold at the markets. In most cases, a home domestic kitchen does not meet the full requirements of the Food Safety Standards. For example, a separate hand wash basin, and all equipment on legs and or casters for ease of cleaning are just a couple of requirements that you would not find in a domestic kitchen.

So Council will relax some of these requirements (providing the kitchen is still in good repair and is clean and well maintained) to allow a person to make jams and chutney, or biscuits or cakes (with no fresh creams) to be packaged at home and then sold to the markets.

Council does not allow any higher risk food such as meat or chicken products or egg products or any types of food that contains these types of potentially hazardous ingredients in them to be made at home as the kitchen is not fitted out in accordance with the Food Safety Standards, and the potential for contamination could occur.  Temperature control is also another major issue as the domestic fridge may not meet the high demand if you were to make these types of food at home. Furthermore, the transportation of these foods would also have to be taken into account and how long would it be out of any temperature control before it is sold. All of these issues are addressed with a commercial kitchen set up as it has the equipment and procedures in place to identify and control these critical control points.

Therefore if you wished to make jams and chutneys from your farm or from some surplus fruits or vegetables in the back yard (value adding as well in some circumstances), Council will require that you licence your home kitchen under the Food Act 2006 to prepare these low risk foods only and bottle them (using only new sterile bottles with labels on them) and they can be sold at various markets or from the farm door. The requirements for when you can sell them can be address from the town planning department as they have certain requirements under the current planning scheme and the proposed planning scheme.

Having said this, if you wish to sell fresh whole produce from the farm door, then no licence is required by the Council as there is no preparation or handling or cutting of the food before it is sold. So these foods in their whole state can be sold without a Food Licence. But no cutting or juicing of them must be done in order for there to be no licence.

The Food Licence is designed to ensure that Food is prepared by the person in a safe and suitable manner. Inspections are carried out on the premise to ensure it is safe and compliant.

I hope this makes sense Jo, if you need any further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I will also ensure that question 1 is answered by our town planning department as I do believe the requirements for what you can do will be changing in this particular area of the planning scheme.

Thanks again Jo

Robert D'Addona
Environmental Health Officer

------------------------------------------

So, it's true. If anyone in our community wants to stick a table out the front with 'value add' foods like jams and chutneys they will have to pay $300/year.  Wow.  And then this bit?  Not sure what that means - when?

"The requirements for when you can sell them can be address from the town planning department as they have certain requirements under the current planning scheme and the proposed planning scheme."

And then from Planning:

RoadSide Stall Email

I replied to find out what our zone was - used to be 'Rural' and under the new scheme will be 'Rural Residential':

-----------------------------------------------------------

Your actual property, XXXXXXXXX is zoned Rural Residential under the draft planning scheme.

Within the Rural Residential zone, road side stall is impact assessable development, requiring you to submit a planning application to Council.

See attached a zone map of the Kuranda/Myola area.  All areas in Brown are zoned Rural Residential, all the light green areas are Rural.

Hi Carl,

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

I need some clarification please…

In the attached letter you say:

So under the new scheme to be implemented in 2016 ‘Rural’ properties can set up roadside stalls and sell fresh produce and jams, chutneys, etc as ‘self-assessable’ which means there is no application or fee?

Please advise.

A search on the 'All things Kuranda' Facebook Group for 'barnwell' turns up some posts back in July reporting the clearing of the forest.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/449193461759587/search/?query=Barnwell

I asked Syd Walker what he knew about this land:

---------------------------------------

I know a little Jo

In addition to what's mentioned in the FB page, Envirocare noticed that clearing next on the Barnwell block was making Warrill and Owens Creeks turbid. That's two of the half dozen creeks that are habitat to the Myola Frog - see eg https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.606127089529138.1073741838.298928120249038&type=3

Envirocare referred the development to the Federal Environment Dept, who did a site inspection, confirmed the damage and declared the clearing a controlled action. Cathy & Margaret from Envirocare can tell you much more about that. Our Federal environmental laws are weak but in this case they had some bite.

This is what I sent to Craig Crawford on November 10th:

MYOLA FROG - SPECIFIC THREAT TO HABITAT

At our meeting I promised to send you material regarding an alleged breach of Federal environmental law that threatens Myola frog habitat.

My friend Cathy Retter, who is Chair of Kuranda Envirocare, informs me that the Federal EPBC office carried out a site inspection and that as a result the clearance has become a 'Controlled Action' - although I cannot find it listed yet under EPBC Referrals (seehttp://epbcnotices.environment.gov.au/publicnoticesreferrals/).

Cathy informs me that the official address of the property is 112 Barnwell Road - off Oakforest Road in the Myola/Kuranda area - and that lot numbers involved are Lot 22 N157227, Lot 2 RP703984, Lot 18 N157227, which contain the catchment for Owens Creek. Possibly Lot 16 and 17 may also be involved.

Hope that's useful. This is by no means a solved problem.. but it does have a short history and that history includes some reaction (that's hasn't been totally fruitless from local environmentalists).

Syd

Questions:

  1. How much land is being re-zoned from 'Rural' to 'Rural Residential' in the upcoming draft MRC Planning Scheme that will be implemented shortly?  What is the ecological / conservation status of this land?
  2. As a community, what do we find acceptable in terms of development - residential or otherwise?

15 March 2016: I sent this email to Wet Tropics Management Authority from their website contact form

Hi,

I would like to alert your department to the issue that is arising here in Kuranda.

This $2 million 626ha historically zoned land parcel was purchased recently and has been progressively cleared of rainforest.  We have community concerns about what will become of this prime corridor land as outlined in the document below.

This letter was sent to the new owner of the property asking him to please reconsider his plans.

Backstory: http://www.localstuff.com.au/barnwell-road/

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7AR3j2uPBY

The broader story for the WTMA and our community, of course, is that there will be more historically zoned land parcels coming up for private sale over the next few years that will only be priced for developers.  We need to start working together now to figure out how we can save this land to return to the Wet Tropics.  And what can’t be saved we can try to minimise the impact by encouraging sensitive development, ie ratio building envelope to title size.

Ken Lee paid only $2 million for that land – that is nicks for our State or Federal Government to buy back.

Thank you for your time.

17 March 2016: reply from Wet Tropics Management Authority

Dear Jo

Thank you for your email regarding the Barnwell Road property. Maintaining the Kuranda Envirolink Corridor provides an important landscape linkage connecting the Kuranda National Park to the north and the Barron Gorge National Park to the south, both of which are included in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. It is obviously very desirable to try and maintain as much of native forest as possible to enable the Envirolink to function as a corridor for wildlife movement.

Regarding your recent letter to Mr Ken Lee. I hope you do get a response and if so, I would be interested in you keeping me informed, especially if he expresses any interest in supporting retention or restoration of the Envirolink. Or alternatively, if it is evident he intends to undertake major clearing.

Regards

5 May 2016: and this in response to my question about the timing and process of the application from here.

Good Morning Jo

Further to your email below, please be advised that, as you are not the applicant, specific information in relation to these applications cannot be provided.

However, the following general information relating to applications for permanent road closure is provided.  Also attached is a copy of the Road Closure Application Guide.

When assessing an application for permanent road closure, the following steps are undertaken:

  • Application received and assessed to ensure it is properly made;
  • Land tenure investigation is undertaken to identify the land parcel, adjoining owners and any relevant stakeholders who may have in interest in the land (ie other government agencies and local government);
  • Advertising period – to provide notification to the general public and any relevant stakeholders who may have an interest in the proposed road closure area;
  • Native title assessment;
  • Valuation and inspection of the proposed road closure area;
  • Review of all documents, including any comments received from public and relevant stakeholders;
  • Recommendation made in relation to the application;
  • Decision made on application;
  • Written notice of the decision is forwarded to the applicant (successful or unsuccessful);
  • In the event the application is successful, offer requirements are to be fulfilled by applicant;
  • Upon satisfactory completion of offer requirements, new Deed of Grant granted;
  • Interested parties notified of application outcome.

It is anticipated that a decision on an application of this type is likely to be made within 12 months from the date of receipt of a properly made application, however this timeframe may alter due to external party requirements for assessment of an application.

All future correspondence relative to this matter is to be referred to the Department at the address below or by email to Townsville.SLAMS@dnrm.qld.gov.au (please no larger than 4MB).  Any hard copy correspondence received will be electronically scanned and filed.  For this reason, it is recommended that any attached plans, sketches or maps be no larger than A3-sized.

Recovering Rainforest has been cleared for the past 12 months on the property on the assumption that it was being returned to 'cattle grazing'.  Seems strange when in the press release it says they've been working on the KUR-World project for the last two years and, low and behold, the clearing they have done perfectly fits the KUR-World 'master plan'.  Isn't this a bit 'cart before the horse'?  What kind of "soft guarantees" has our local council and our state government given to Ken Lee - Reever and Ocean Pty Ltd and Urban Sync?

Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre
Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre (legal name Kuranda I...
Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre (legal name Kuranda Information and Support Centre Assoc. Inc.) began in October 1992 when a group of local residents met underneath the Church. They were concerned about “neighbourliness”, the concept of people helping other people in the place where they live. There were very few services in Kuranda at the time, so it was particularly important for these committed individuals to extend their support to those less fortunate than themselves. In the beginning, the centre operated out of a caravan with volunteers starting up a space for people to come and get information and support. It then moved into a little cottage on the block in front of the BP (has since been demolished). The cottage was not in the best shape and was eventually condemned. The centre then moved into a market stall in the small mall leading down to the original markets while we awaited building of our new centre where we now are. The building is owned and was renovated/rebuilt by the QLD Dept of Communities. We moved into the new site in November 2007. Click here to visit our website

This is a FREE group where you GIVE-AWAY items for FREE. Any member posting items for a price will have their post removed without notice or PM. On requesting to join this group/page, you MUST follow ALL guidelines to the group. Once you have clicked the “LIKE” or “Ask To Join” tab, you then have agreed to abide to the rulings/guidelines of this group. Click here to open Facebook page and join group Let’s start a new beginning with the group for 2012. As most members do not like to be governed by rules. I for one do not like rules but in the end we all need to follow some guidelines so the group can function. We need to enforce some sort of rules to maintain the maturity and smooth running of the page from day to day. All in all this entire page has been great! But of late certain things have happened which now has resulted in having to do up rules for usage of this group. Nothing has changed really just a few guidelines. ANY MEMBER WHO HAS BLOCKED ANY ADMIN WILL BE PERMENTLY BAN AND WILL BE REPORTED TO FACEBOOK !! 1. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Polite to ALL members and Admins. 2. No spamming will be tolerated on the wall. LOCAL (Tablelands and surrounding areas) businesses ONLY are to advertise on this group unless previously arranged by the Admins. Anything else will be removed from the wall without notification. 3. Bumping - bumping is the practice of commenting on a post or photo to move to the top of the page. This practice would serve you better then repeatedly reposting and clogging the wall. 4. Photos - removing/deleting photos of items GIVEN AWAY/no longer available is a MUST, this stops the wasting of time between buyer and seller. If you fail to answer a buyers question within a week the photo and post, it will be removed under the assumption that that item has been given away. If an item is still available and has been in the album over a month write a quick comment under each item 'still available' this bumps the photo to the top of the wall also potentially getting you a buyer who normal would scan through the photo album. Also if you have numerous photos, create an album on your profile setting the privacy to public and copy and paste the link on the wall. This however is NOT a requirement of the group, but it does help you when it come to removing given away items easier :-) Photos will be deleted unless stated 'still available' this process will be continued every few months so please be sure to keep your details and availability current. 5. Abuse will not be tolerated towards members and admins, immediate banning and removal will take place. 6. Plagiarism of ANY kind is NOT TOLERATED. Whether it be a members words or mine/groups. This is a Facebook offense and anyone caught doing so will be report to Facebook as an 'intellectual property infringement' which may result in your removal of your Facebook account. 7. First to comment - it is up to the individual giver who they choose to give it to. LOCAL (Cairns and surrounding areas) businesses ONLY are to advertise on this group unless previously arranged by the Admins. If another member offers more PIE then another for an item it is again up to the giver as to who he/her gives it to. 8. Any concerns, please pm the admins and not the wall and we the admins will do everything in our power to resolve the matter. 9. 'fake' or 'non real name' profiles will be monitored and removed if suspected of inappropriate behavior. 10. Please place a location on your photos and post eg Cairns, Innisfail, Mossman etc Thank you for your time :-) 11. KDSC offers the best of both worlds with new state of the art primary school facilities and modern high school learning areas.
Welcome to Kuranda District State College (KDSC). The College is now in its fifth year of operation, having been created from the amalgamation of Kuranda District State School and Kuranda State High School at the commencement of 2007. KDSC offers the best of both worlds with new state of the art primary school facilities and modern high school learning areas together with a proud 117 years primary school history and 11 years of high school operations. The college is set on over 40 acres of replanted rainforest with our only neighbour being the Barron River. The college has spectacular scenery including the surrounding mountains and in addition has some historical and indigenous sites of significance on the grounds.
With over 400 students from Preparatory Year to Year 12, the College is the perfect size for teachers and students to form effective relationships and partnerships. Class sizes are generally small (around 18 to 25) in Prep to Year 9 with Senior Phase Students enjoying class sizes ranging from 5 to 25. Despite our small enrolment size, we currently offer a subject range equivalent to that offered by much larger schools. The college is well provisioned to meet the academic learning needs of students including a staff that has a good gender and experience balance. In addition the college has a Guidance Officer / Careers Counsellor, Youth Support Worker, School Based Nurse, Learning Support Teacher and Special Needs Teacher with visiting specialist teachers in a variety of areas including Behaviour Support. The college has had an extremely successful beginning in terms of academic achievement. The college has a physical education and sport program. Primary school children undertake specialist PE lessons each week in addition to the class activities that are delivered by their teacher. Upper primary students also access Barron River team sports days and athletics carnivals. Junior secondary students (Middle Phase learners) undertake a daily fitness program in conjunction with a PE program and interschool sports. Senior Secondary students may choose to undertake Sport and Recreation as a Vocational Qualification. They also have access to interschool sport and athletics. The college has a strong student welfare philosophy and program, which is under-pinned by the Positive Behaviour Schools program. Staff and students undertake regular lessons and training to ensure that students remain safe and supported at the college. Call us on 4085 5344 or click here visit our website

Kuranda Birdwatchers Cabin

Our property consists mainly of rainforest, is close to Kuranda National Park and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, and only 5 minutes from the village of Kuranda.
Kuranda Birdwatchers’ Cabin is located at the edge of some of the oldest rainforest in the world, and yet less than 30 minutes from Cairns International airport.
The pole-home cabin is the only guest accommodation on the property, set well apart and screened from the main house. Whether you choose to relax on your private deck, go spotlighting on the property in the evening, or explore the surrounding area, you will encounter an abundance of local flora and fauna. The area is home to more than 3000 plant species, of which 700 are endemic, 100 species of mammals, 50 species of frogs and more than 370 species of birds (nearly half of Australia’s bird species). Some of them are easily observed even from the cabin’s deck. Regular visitors or residents are cassowaries, Victoria’s riflebirds, chowchillas, musky rat-kangaroos, striped possums, amethystine pythons, and many frog and butterfly species. We are naturalists ourselves and on our travels we cherished privacy and undisturbed viewing of wildlife. This is what we endeavour to offer our guests. Surrounded by rainforest, and approximately 400m above sea-level, Kuranda has a considerably cooler climate than Cairns. This means you can enjoy the sounds of the rainforest and the creek nearby through open windows without the need for air-conditioning. Kuranda Birdwatcher's Cabin is situated between Cairns and Mareeba, you will have easy access to a multitude of attractions and activities between Cairns and Port Douglas, and on the Atherton Tablelands. Kuranda Envirocare
We value and seek to protect the natural environme...
We value and seek to protect the natural environment of Kuranda and its environs, work to conserve and repair biodiversity in the area, and to educate the community to do likewise.
Kuranda is known as 'the village in the rainforest', and is familiar to millions of people from all over the world who have visited as tourists. It lies at the top of the range inland from Cairns, and is accessible by road, rail (a tourist train operates daily) and by Skyrail, one of the world's longest cable car links. The altitude of about 400 metres can have quite an impact on temperature, and Kuranda is sometimes referred to as Cairns' 'air-conditioned suburb'.
Kuranda Envirocare has a special commitment to preserving and strengthening the Envirolink Corridor, a 10 kilometre arc of remnant rainforest vegetation south and west of Kuranda, linking World Heritage listed rainforests north and south of Kuranda. The Barron River Gorge divides the Wet Tropics rainforest at this point. Cairns city has expanded to the mouth of the gorge, while Kuranda is situated above the Barron Falls, each effectivly blocking the movement of wildlife around the ends of the gorge. The Envirolink Corridor passes through freehold and leasehold land around this constriction, and has a special significance for maintaining connectivity between separated populations of animals such as the endangered Southern Cassowary. Kuranda Envirocare, through regular working bees and operation of a native plant nursery, is restoring the most vulnerable sections of the Envirolink Corridor. Click here to visit our website
