Designed as an extension program for the more advanced, clever students. It is not a tuition support program. Anyone aged 9-99 is welcome to participate. The program involves a series of fun physical and mental games, puzzles and problem solving exercises which will enhance cognition and improve memory.
After becoming interested in the story of our Kuranda State Forest from an article in the Kuranda Paper I went to a Friends of the Earth meeting on 14 May 2015 to find out more. As I am gathering more information I thought it best to collect it here so we can all access and see the paths that are being trodden and by whom. Please add your comments to add more to this story.
After the meeting John Gleu (Friends of the Earth Kuranda) sent me some additional information via email from news articles he had collected (thanks John :- ):
And outlined some questions FoE wanted to ask Hancock Plantations:
- Are there any other chemicals that you use as a weedicide apart from Roundup and Starane?
- What chemical is used as the pre-emergent?
- Do you use, or did you used to use, 245T, 24 D, Atrazine, Simazine, or anything similar on the Kuranda pine plantation?
- How long is the harvest cycle from planting to logging?
- Have they done water tests to see if there is roundup and Starane runoff, or its break down products, in the local creeks and the Barron River?
- Now that Round off has being re-classified as ‘probably carcinogenic’ how are you going to change your use of the chemical or its application methods?
- What type of helicopter is used for the spray?
- Who do you notify the local people before aerial spraying is doing?
- What is the main use of the timber after it has been cut and where is it sent to?
- Is there a possibility of growing native trees that are more suitable for the area and for the wildlife?

Hancock Queensland Plantations has been sold 300,000 hectares of Queensland State Forest to wreck. In the area just around Kuranda they have 4,200 hectares to trash - Plantation forests on State land
"Word of Mouth" has it that the timber is being used for pallets, posts but mainly it is just being woodchipped to use as mulch. There is little demand for the wood now. And the timber characteristics of this species means it is a very low value wood.

After this I started to wonder about the aerial spraying as at the time we and our neighbours could hear the planes at night...

Fluroxypyr is listed on the label as being highly toxic to freshwater fish and aquatic invertebrates and glyphosate has just been reclassified by the World Health Organisation a month ago as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’ – based on the fact that it is found to be carcinogenic to animals.
The reclassification of glyphosate by the WHO is of great concern as the chemical runoff from the pine plantations goes into the Barron River which is used as Kuranda’s town water supply.
Spray drift is also seen as a problem with the close proximity of homes and Kuranda town centre being just a few kilometres away.
The nature corridors that have been left along creeks and streams for the wildlife such as cassowaries are totally inadequate considering the aerial spraying.

Then panic set in as I realised our precious wildlife is being affected... even though we may not be able to "see" it yet. Of course they would be affected by products containing chemicals such as glyphosate and fluroxypur - there is plenty about both of those on the internet - you can see for yourself.
"Word of Mouth" has it that bee hives were affected in the area - I'm yet to substantiate that - anyone have any experiences that live close to the drop zone?
Then I'm Google mapping trying to figure out where the plantations are in relation to our property... we keep bees. I'm looking at the massive clearing here:
and thinking geez that's a long way off where we are... until a friend in front of Google earth pointed out the extent to which the plantations extend across our Kuranda region OMG.

By now, for me, this story is becoming more of a conservation issue. I'm trying to figure out how it's ended up that our state government thought that re-leasing the land - for 99 years- to Hancock Plantations should happen at all in such a fragile place as the Wet Tropics.
Then I fell in love with the cassowary... as I came to understand we have our own 'Pliocene Park' here with the cassowary as the star attraction! How could the whole world not be interested in preserving what is sure to be a remnant population of birds that have survived from the early Pliocene 3.6 to 2.58 million years ago. There might not be any dinosaurs on earth anymore... but there are creatures that can remind us of that time like the cassowary!
Our cassowary and its rainforest home are like a time capsule that has miraculously survived multiple climatic events that caused mass extinctions like the Quaternary extinction event (the movie Ice Age was based on this) and others. Habitat loss is now the biggest threat to our cassowary :- ( I plan to make a video about our cassowary for kuranda.tv.

Myself being a big fan of developing our local food economy I was in disbelief - really? When was the last time someone died from food poisoning eating Grannies Jam?
Of course preserving seasonal abundance is an art that our grandmothers and those that came before honed over many generations and cultures - it prevented waste and "saved" food for later. These days with supermarkets there is less emphasis on saving seasonal abundance but nevertheless - that doesn't mean it's not a really important idea to preserve for future generations - it just means the supermarkets have made us forget!
I really admire the 'Preservers' in our community - those people who can't bear to see waste and who see the jars amongst the surplus fruits and vegetables - rather than just the bin. I appreciate the work involved in preserving foods - we have done a bit of it ourselves - and the joy at cracking open a jar of your own tomato sauce from the abundance a year ago!
Seemed to me the stakes were a little high at $300 / year for a bit of paper to grant you permission to make preserves! Wtf?

Sounds sweet - except "manufacturing jam" sounds way to official for making some jam at home and sticking it out front at your place for sale and "simply to make application for a food licence" sounds easy enough except it costs $300 / year which isn't simple when you're flogging your homemade jam for $5-10 a jar! Maybe a simple solution on your salary for your home-business-cottage-industry Mr Gilmore! But what about the rest of us?

I wanted to clarify a few points from this article, if I may.
I understand the definition of a “Shop” as per the article.
Some questions:
- For a “Roadside Stall” you can sell fresh produce grown on your property – is that correct? Is there a fee for this permit?
- If you want to sell homemade value-add foods such as jam – is this different from only selling fresh produce- as above?
- Is there a distinction for different types of homemade value-add foods according to their risk of posing a health issue?

High-risk foods
High-risk foods can be defines as “any ready-to-eat food that will support the growth of pathogenic bacteria easily and does not require any further heat treatment or cooking”. These types of foods are more likely to be implicated as vehicles of food poisoning organisms consumed in food poisoning incidents. Such foods are usually high in protein, require strict temperature control and protection from contamination and include:
- cooked meat and poultry such as; beef, pork, ham, lamb, chicken, turkey, duck
- cooked meat products such as; meat pies & pasties, pate, meat stock & gravy, cook-chill meals
- dairy produce such as; milk, cream, artificial cream, custards, products containing unpasteurised milk, ripened soft & moulded cheeses
- egg products such as; cooked eggs, quiche and products containing uncooked or lightly cooked eggs, for example; mayonnaise, mousse, home-made ice cream
- shellfish and other sea-foods such as; mussels, cockles, cooked prawns, raw oysters
- Farinaceous dishes including; cooked rice, pasta, couscous
Low-risk foods
Low-risk foods are ambient-stable such as; bread, biscuits, cereals, crisps and cakes (not cream cakes). Such foods are unlikely to be implicated in food poisoning and include:
- foods that have been preserved, for example; smoked or salted fish
- dry goods, those that contain minimal amounts of moisture, such as; bread, flour, biscuits
- acidic foods, for example; pickled foods, vinegar, fruit
- fermented products such as; salami, pepperoni
- foods with high sugar/fat content for example; jam & chocolate
- tinned food, whilst unopened
Keep “raw” and “cooked” food separate
Clean and disinfect equipment and surfaces after preparing “raw” food.
Do not leave food at room temperature for more than 1 hour
Do not refreeze food if it has defrosted.

HI Jo,
Thank you for your email enquiry regarding the roadside stalls in the new Mareeba Shire Planning scheme.
I have noticed your questions relate to town planning issues as well as Environmental Health Issues. Hence I have forwarded this email onto the Town Planning department for answers to your questions 1.
However I am able to clarify question 2 and 3 for you.
With regards to the types of food you can manufacture from a 'home kitchen', the low risk foods you mentioned below would acceptable. Except for the smoke meat and fish products. This is not a licensable activity under Local Council. This is licenced and regulated by Safe Food Queensland a State Government department.
As it stands, Mareeba Shire Council will allow a home kitchen to be licenced if only low risk shelf stable food are produced and then can be on sold at the markets. In most cases, a home domestic kitchen does not meet the full requirements of the Food Safety Standards. For example, a separate hand wash basin, and all equipment on legs and or casters for ease of cleaning are just a couple of requirements that you would not find in a domestic kitchen.
So Council will relax some of these requirements (providing the kitchen is still in good repair and is clean and well maintained) to allow a person to make jams and chutney, or biscuits or cakes (with no fresh creams) to be packaged at home and then sold to the markets.
Council does not allow any higher risk food such as meat or chicken products or egg products or any types of food that contains these types of potentially hazardous ingredients in them to be made at home as the kitchen is not fitted out in accordance with the Food Safety Standards, and the potential for contamination could occur. Temperature control is also another major issue as the domestic fridge may not meet the high demand if you were to make these types of food at home. Furthermore, the transportation of these foods would also have to be taken into account and how long would it be out of any temperature control before it is sold. All of these issues are addressed with a commercial kitchen set up as it has the equipment and procedures in place to identify and control these critical control points.
Therefore if you wished to make jams and chutneys from your farm or from some surplus fruits or vegetables in the back yard (value adding as well in some circumstances), Council will require that you licence your home kitchen under the Food Act 2006 to prepare these low risk foods only and bottle them (using only new sterile bottles with labels on them) and they can be sold at various markets or from the farm door. The requirements for when you can sell them can be address from the town planning department as they have certain requirements under the current planning scheme and the proposed planning scheme.
Having said this, if you wish to sell fresh whole produce from the farm door, then no licence is required by the Council as there is no preparation or handling or cutting of the food before it is sold. So these foods in their whole state can be sold without a Food Licence. But no cutting or juicing of them must be done in order for there to be no licence.
The Food Licence is designed to ensure that Food is prepared by the person in a safe and suitable manner. Inspections are carried out on the premise to ensure it is safe and compliant.

I will also ensure that question 1 is answered by our town planning department as I do believe the requirements for what you can do will be changing in this particular area of the planning scheme.

In addition to what's mentioned in the FB page, Envirocare noticed that clearing next on the Barnwell block was making Warrill and Owens Creeks turbid. That's two of the half dozen creeks that are habitat to the Myola Frog - see eg https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.606127089529138.1073741838.298928120249038&type=3
Envirocare referred the development to the Federal Environment Dept, who did a site inspection, confirmed the damage and declared the clearing a controlled action. Cathy & Margaret from Envirocare can tell you much more about that. Our Federal environmental laws are weak but in this case they had some bite.
This is what I sent to Craig Crawford on November 10th:
MYOLA FROG - SPECIFIC THREAT TO HABITAT
At our meeting I promised to send you material regarding an alleged breach of Federal environmental law that threatens Myola frog habitat.
My friend Cathy Retter, who is Chair of Kuranda Envirocare, informs me that the Federal EPBC office carried out a site inspection and that as a result the clearance has become a 'Controlled Action' - although I cannot find it listed yet under EPBC Referrals (seehttp://epbcnotices.environment.gov.au/publicnoticesreferrals/).
Cathy informs me that the official address of the property is 112 Barnwell Road - off Oakforest Road in the Myola/Kuranda area - and that lot numbers involved are Lot 22 N157227, Lot 2 RP703984, Lot 18 N157227, which contain the catchment for Owens Creek. Possibly Lot 16 and 17 may also be involved.
Hope that's useful. This is by no means a solved problem.. but it does have a short history and that history includes some reaction (that's hasn't been totally fruitless from local environmentalists).

This $2 million 626ha historically zoned land parcel was purchased recently and has been progressively cleared of rainforest. We have community concerns about what will become of this prime corridor land as outlined in the document below.

The broader story for the WTMA and our community, of course, is that there will be more historically zoned land parcels coming up for private sale over the next few years that will only be priced for developers. We need to start working together now to figure out how we can save this land to return to the Wet Tropics. And what can’t be saved we can try to minimise the impact by encouraging sensitive development, ie ratio building envelope to title size.
Ken Lee paid only $2 million for that land – that is nicks for our State or Federal Government to buy back.

Thank you for your email regarding the Barnwell Road property. Maintaining the Kuranda Envirolink Corridor provides an important landscape linkage connecting the Kuranda National Park to the north and the Barron Gorge National Park to the south, both of which are included in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. It is obviously very desirable to try and maintain as much of native forest as possible to enable the Envirolink to function as a corridor for wildlife movement.
Regarding your recent letter to Mr Ken Lee. I hope you do get a response and if so, I would be interested in you keeping me informed, especially if he expresses any interest in supporting retention or restoration of the Envirolink. Or alternatively, if it is evident he intends to undertake major clearing.

When assessing an application for permanent road closure, the following steps are undertaken:
- Application received and assessed to ensure it is properly made;
- Land tenure investigation is undertaken to identify the land parcel, adjoining owners and any relevant stakeholders who may have in interest in the land (ie other government agencies and local government);
- Advertising period – to provide notification to the general public and any relevant stakeholders who may have an interest in the proposed road closure area;
- Native title assessment;
- Valuation and inspection of the proposed road closure area;
- Review of all documents, including any comments received from public and relevant stakeholders;
- Recommendation made in relation to the application;
- Decision made on application;

- Upon satisfactory completion of offer requirements, new Deed of Grant granted;

The Queensland Coordinator General has been asked to assess the KUR-World as a 'Coordinated project', as outlined here:

Recovering Rainforest has been cleared for the past 12 months on the property on the assumption that it was being returned to 'cattle grazing'. Seems strange when in the press release it says they've been working on the KUR-World project for the last two years and, low and behold, the clearing they have done perfectly fits the KUR-World 'master plan'. Isn't this a bit 'cart before the horse'? What kind of "soft guarantees" has our local council and our state government given to Ken Lee - Reever and Ocean Pty Ltd and Urban Sync?
